Drain Maintenance – Root Infestation

August 31st, 2021

Root infestation and subsequent blocked drains are a common problem on drains near to planted areas.

Roots infiltrate drains either through defective pipe joints or cracks, fractures and holes in the pipework. If the pipework is not badly damaged, roots can often be removed using specialist root cutting equipment or high pressure jetting using a specialist root cutting jet head.

If the root infestation is extensive and damage to the pipework is great, the appropriate solution to this would be to line the drain or carry out an excavation and install new pipework. here at John Wall Drainage Service our Operators can advise on the correct action needed.

Cesspit Maintenance

June 21st, 2021

Maintaining your cesspit is essential, not just for your household but for your local council authority too.

A common problem with cesspits is overflowing, which can cause issues regarding cracked walls and punctures, which may lead to external leaks. Unlike septic tanks, a cesspit has no rudimentary treatment system, which means that whatever goes in must come out. Under the Public Health Act and Water Resources Act your local council authority has a duty to ensure your cesspit is in good working order, routine inspections are commonplace throughout the UK.

Do’s and Don’ts regarding ccesspit maintenance

Never lift the lid of your cesspit to check levels, inside there are a whole lot of toxic nasty’s, make sure you have an alarm system fitted within your pit.

Cesspits are often located in areas where other sewage solutions are just not practical. Make sure your cesspit is located at least 15 metres away from any outbuilding and not less than 10 metres from any watercourse.

Do not place heavy objects above manhole covers.

Do not drive over any cesspit covers, especially old brick-built pits.
